Abstract
According to the 2000 Demographic Census, the illiteracy rate in the city of Rio de Janeiro is 4.4% of the population aged 15 and older. Compared to 1991, when the same rate was 6.1%, there was a significant decline. The illiteracy rate in Rio de Janeiro (4.4%) in 2000 is one-third of the national rate in Brazil (13.6%).
