Abstract

In Brazil, the female population reached 86.3 million in the 2000 Census, representing 51% of the total population. The female surplus at that time was approximately 2.7 million women. In Rio de Janeiro, the female surplus accounts for 13.2% of the total male population in the city, which is four times higher than the national average.
