Abstract
The first data from the 2010 Census on subnormal agglomerations (which, in the case of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, correspond to favelas or urbanized communities) were released in December 2011. In this Census, the IBGE conducted a specific investigation aimed at improving quality standards in the identification of subnormal agglomerations, introducing managerial, methodological, and technological innovations. This effort resulted in a special publication that, for the first time at the national level, presents individualized data on subnormal agglomerations, subtotals by cities, cartograms of results, and a brief analysis of such settlements.
