Abstract
This book is the result of a partnership that brought together the Instituto Pereira Passos (IPP), an agency of the Rio de Janeiro City Hall; the Instituto Universitário de Pesquisas do Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ); and the Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica e Aplicada (IPEA), a Federal Government agency, in association with the Fundação João Pinheiro. The objective was to produce the Human Development Index (HDI) for neighborhoods in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The original aim was to generate a comprehensive overview of changes in the living conditions of the city's population during the 1990s, based on the 1991 and 2000 Demographic Censuses. This is the overview now being presented to the public.
