Abstract

The structural and situational research on industry, available from IBGE at the national and state levels, is also conducted for the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro thanks to the agreement signed between the Pereira Passos Institute (IPP) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in 2006, which also includes other structural and situational studies. The industrial indicators from the Annual Industrial Survey (PIA) and the Monthly Industrial Survey - Physical Production (PIM-PF) follow the same principles and methodology as those generated for Brazil and the Federation Units. PIA data has been available since 1996 and includes information about the number of local units, employed personnel, wages, net sales revenue, gross value of industrial production, industrial operation costs, and the value of industrial transformation. In total, there is data for the general industry (mining and manufacturing) and 23 activities. As for the situational survey (PIM-PF), fixed-base indexes are available since January 1991, from a sample covering only nine activities, along with the total for the manufacturing industry, reflecting a less diversified industry.
