Abstract
Commercial activity in the city of Rio de Janeiro is part of the Services sector, which, according to information from IBGE for the year 2005, was responsible for 85.0% of the municipal Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The sectoral breakdown proposed by IBGE does not allow for the abstraction of the commerce sector's weight within Services, which leads us to rely on data derived from the Rio de Janeiro GDP project implemented at the end of the last century in partnership with IBGE. This project produced quarterly data from 1985 to 2002 with detailed activity breakdowns, based on the old methodology. According to that project, in 2002, the participation of commerce in Rio de Janeiro was estimated at 6.9% of the total GDP and 12.1% of the Services sector.
